Queensland Diving

The Great Barrier Reef Australia is a sensational scuba diving location which you would be excused for thinking is the primary dive spot in Queensland. Although this wondrous marine park is very popular for diving and snorkelling charters, there are so many other tropical north Queensland coasts, wrecks and reefs to discover.

Cairns and Port Douglas have a great deal to offer scuba diving enthusiasts with Flynn and Millin Reef straight out from Cairns and Saxon, Hastings and Norman Reefs, amongst many others, off Port Douglas. When scuba diving, you can choose to go out on a day boat, or book a ‘liveaboard’ and really live it up, with exotic diving and snorkelling on tap.

Heading down the coastline you will find diving in the Whitsunday Islands just as spectacular, with calm warm waters, brilliant nooks and ‘swim throughs’ to explore.

Further south, diving operators around Brisbane offer you a huge choice of sunken wrecks, artificial reefs and caves to investigate. In 2005, the HMAS Brisbane was sunk just off the Sunshine Coast at Mudjimba Island, which makes for excellent fresh viewing. South of Brisbane, scuba diving is a favourite activity on North Stradbroke Island.

On approach to the Queensland and New South Wales border, you will be delighted to find more wrecks to see and a gorgeous spread of island surrounds just north of Surfers Paradise. At the southern end of the Gold Coast, scuba diving is best found off Palm Beach Reef and Cook Islands for the non-advanced diver. For a more challenging dive, try Nine Mile Reef.
